Melissa virus creator arrested in New Jersey後は任せた（爆笑）。TRENTON, N.J. - The New Jersey attorney general has a message for the maker of the Melissa computer virus: he plans to send the e-mail saboteur straight to jail.
David L. Smith, 30, of Aberdeen, N. J., faces up to 40 years in prison and a $480,000 fine for originating the highly contagious e-mail virus, New Jersey Attorney General Peter Verniero announced Friday.
"If he is tried and successfully convicted, he will do hard time," Verniero said Friday at an afternoon news conference.
Melissa, which Smith named after a Florida topless dancer, is the insidious virus which caused a worldwide computer disruption earlier this week by swamping e-mail systems.
It first came on the scene last Friday and, despite weekend warnings, quickly spread with the start of the work week. The mutant e-mail presented itself with "Important Message" in the subject line and appeared to be from a friend.
The text of the message says innocuously, "Here is that document you asked for ... don't show it to anyone else" with a winking smiley face formed by the punctuation marks ;-), a popular e-mail symbol.
Attached to the message is a document file that, when opened, digs into the user's address book and sends infected documents to the first 50 addresses. The virus doesn't harm its host computer but overwhelms the network servers with e-mail.
Smith, a network programmer, is charged with several charges, including interruption of public communications, conspiracy to commit the offense, attempt to commit the offense, and third-degree theft of computer service.
Smith was tracked down with the help of America Online technicians and a computer task force of federal and state agents, said Rita Malley, a spokeswoman for Verniero.
Earlier this week, experts found clues that the virus was written 15 months ago from a stolen America Online account. Malley said they believe the virus originated from Smith's apartment.
Smith was arrested Thursday night at his brother's house. He was taken to Monmouth County Jail but has been released on $100,000 bail.
Verniero said Smith worked for an AT&T Corp. subcontractor. The company's name was not immediately available.

PUFFY 吉村と「TMR」西川が電撃入籍！うーん、そんなにも電撃でないような気がするけど（そうなんか）。 新婚生活が目に浮かぶなぁ。 もちろん西川くんが尻の下に敷かれてるの（笑）。人気歌手の「T.M.Revolution」こと西川貴教（28）＝本名同じ＝と、人気デュオ「PUFFY」の吉村由美（24）＝西川由美さん＝が今月２日に電撃入籍したことを３日、緊急発表した。 挙式、披露宴、ハネムーンの予定はなく、吉村も仕事を続けていく方針だ。
